Prince Harry compares wife Meghan Markle to mom Princess Diana

Prince Harry compares Meghan Markle’s “compassion” and “warmth” to his late mother Princess Diana in their new Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan.”

“So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mom,” Harry says in the first episode of the highly anticipated docuseries. “She has the same compassion, she has the same empathy, she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”

During the episode, in which Harry repeatedly slams the press for “harassing” him his entire life, he expresses his deep concerns that Markle was going to suffer the same fate as Diana, who died in a car accident while being chased by paparazzi in 1997.

“I was terrified of her being driven away by the media,” Harry admits.

It’s not the first time that Harry has brought up the parallels between his mother — who died in a car accident while being chased by paparazzi in 1997 — and Markle.

“My biggest regret is not making more of a stance earlier on in my relationship with my wife and calling out the racism when I did,” he said on the AppleTV+ series, “The Me You Can’t See.”

“History was repeating itself. My mother was chased to her death while she was in a relationship with someone that wasn’t white, and now look what’s happened.”

He added, “You want to talk about history repeating itself — they’re not going to stop until [Meghan] dies. It’s incredibly triggering to potentially lose another woman in my life, but the list is growing. And it all comes back to the same people, the same business model, the same industry.”

The “Spare” author, 38, reportedly believes Markle, 41, is also similar to Diana in other ways too.

In 2017, Harry eagerly introduced Markle to Diana’s two sisters, Baroness Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and best friend, Julia Samuel.

“Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancée,” Tom Bower wrote in “Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors.” “Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was disappointed.

“No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the royal family.”

However, both women struggled under the constricts of the royal family and both contemplated suicide.

According to Andrew Morton’s book, “Diana: Her True Story–in Her Own Words,” the former Princess of Wales attempted suicide on five different occasions.

She first tried by throwing herself down the stairs of Sandringham Palace in January 1982, according to the book.

“On another, she slashed at her wrists with a razor blade. Another time she cut herself with the serrated edge of a lemon slicer; on yet another occasion, during a heated argument with Charles, she picked up a penknife lying on her dressing table and cut her chest and her thighs. Though she was bleeding, her husband scorned her. Charles thought that she was faking her problems,” Morton wrote.

Markle has also been open about her suicidal thoughts and mental health before quitting the royal family and moving to California with Harry in 2020.

“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” an emotional Markle confessed during her 2021 bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“Look, I was really ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry especially, because I know how much loss he has suffered, but I knew that if I didn’t say it, then I would do it,” the former actress admitted. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

Earlier this week, the Duchess of Sussex brought up the issue at the Ripple of Hope Gala, explaining why she went public.

“I don’t want anyone to feel alone,” she told the crowd. “And when you’ve been through anything that’s challenging, and everyone, especially in the past few years with lockdown and COVID, that spike in numbers of people having an experience they might not be voicing.

“We all need to, when we can, if we feel brave enough, to just speak honestly about your own experience,” she added.

“It gives other people space and the courage to do the same, but more than that to really feel like you’re not alone, because I think that is often what can be the largest hindrance when you feel that way, you don’t see a way out.”
