There’s nothing holding him back.
Shawn Mendes is opening up about his decision to lop off his famous flowing curls in favor of a buzzcut in January.
“I think everyone should know what they look like with a shaved head,” Mendes, 24, told the Wall Street Journal of his hair makeover.
“I also was just feeling this urge to just shake myself up a little bit.”
In the same interview, the “Stitches” hitmaker explained his decision to cancel his world tour last year to focus on his mental health.
“The process was very difficult. A lot of doing therapy, a lot of trying to understand how I was feeling and what was making me feel that way,” Mendes said.
The single singer, who split from Camila Cabello in November 2021, ushered in 2023 with the big chop – much to his fans’ chagrin.
“HELP IDK IF I SHOULD SCREAM, cry OR THROW UP,” one tweeted at the time, while another wrote, “i’m grieving.”
“i’m so sad right now 😭😭😭😭,” a third added.
Mendes isn’t the only celebrity who’s talked about the impact of shaving off their hair.
Will and Jada Smith’s daughter, Willow, told Glamour UK in 2022, “Shaving my head is maybe the most radical thing I’ve done in the name of beauty.”
Netflix star Joey King has also embraced the game-changing power of being bald, telling Allure in 2022, “I’ve never felt more free or more in tune with my beauty. I couldn’t hide behind my hair.”
“Grey’s Anatomy” heartthrob Patrick Dempsey experienced a similar social media reaction when he shaved his head in December, with fans saying they were “devastated.”
